Kids Christmas Craft: Make Snowflake Placemats

Easy Christmas crafts are a great way to celebrate the season with your family. This craft should take less than an afternoon, though remember that the glue and glitter does take some time to dry. This is a fun craft that the children can make for the entire family.

For this easy Christmas craft you will need:

blue construction paper

white paper 8 ½ x 14 inches (one sheet for every placemat you wish to make)

white paper (more sheets to make snowflakes)

silver glitter

glue

clear Contact paper (to cover the placemats with, enough to cover back and front of all placemats)

scissors

glue stick (double check that they are non-toxic)

To make this craft begin by setting out newspaper to protect the surface that you are working on. Then take out the 8 ½ x 14 inch white sheets of paper. These will be the bottoms of your placemats that you will work on. Make sure that you have enough of these sheets for the number of snowflake placemats that you would like to make.

Then take your sheet of blue paper and glue stick it down to the 8 ½ x 14 inch sheet of white paper. Leave a space of white on each side of the placemat, so the blue paper is in the middle.

Now it is time to make snowflakes. Take a piece of white paper (typical size of 8 ½ x 11 inches) and fold it in 4 pieces. Then cut it into 4 pieces. You will use this to make 4 snowflakes. Take one of the pieces of paper you have made and then fold it in half, and then fold it again into half and then fold it again in half. Now make triangular cuts into the paper, make circular cuts, whatever you please. These interesting cuts you make will create pretty snowflakes. Do this with all 4 pieces of paper and it is ideal to do something different with each snowflake design (because remember – no actual snowflake is like another!). ~Glue the snowflakes onto the blue paper. You may need to trim them a bit to make them fit attractively, use your best judgement.

Now let your child write their name in glitter, or some other holiday greeting in glitter. They can also create designs on the snowflakes in glitter.

Allow the glitter and the glue to dry. Once they have dried it is time to put the Contact paper on to protect the placemat (an adult or older teen should do this step).

To put the Contact paper on, first cut a strip of the Contact paper that is slightly bigger than the placemat – so perhaps one that is 16 inches long. Cut two of these, one for the front and another for the back.

Begin by covering the front of the placemat. Then cover the back of the placemat. Now trim the excess Contact paper off.

This placemat is perfect for gentle use. You can dry with a towel if you get crumbs on it, or something sticky. It will not stand up to washing or a wet sponge.
